New Wave Of Violence Against Asian Americans

I woke this morning to news of another violent hate crime against a 65-year-old Asian woman in midtown Manhattan, who was on her way to church at 11:30am on Sunday. Camera footage showed bystanders doing nothing to help.

Sadly, we know from U.S. history that these attacks will continue, until enough people say that it is not okay to attack Asians or any group of people based on race, gender, faith, country of origin, etc.

There is a long history of hate crimes against Asians in America and we appear to be in a violent new wave. It is not slowing down and we need your help. If you see something, will you help us?

I agree that this is terrible, but I also attended a training about bystander intervention and how humans are conditioned to think someone else will help and keep moving. I encourage everyone to seek out training like this that teaches you how to consider yourself the intervener at all times. Even slight non-confrontational intervention can deescalate the situation tremendously.

There are two crimes here. The second and worst crime is a bunch of people watching and doing nothing. Even a shout of What The Fuck are You Idiots Doing! would have an effect, even if only to provoke a reaction.
The third of this unholy trio (which often happens in the UK and here in Europe) is:
a. Innocent person is attacked and beaten in public
b. Bystanders watch but do nothing
c. One of the attackers films it on their phone and puts it online.
