Marking the Occasion

New York City is an amazing, never-easy, ego-crushing, mettle-testing place to live. I just passed my 12-year anniversary of moving here.

I guess I wouldn't trade it. That's the kind of trademark ambivalence New Yorkers have -- a feeling like you survived the day, the week, and the last 12 years of your life.

I'll probably make popcorn and watch Netflix later to celebrate. Cheers.

Back when I was about 19 and in college, a friend of mine from the Bronx (what was he doing at a small teaching college in Iowa?) told me I could "write my own ticket" if I went to NYC. But, he also said, "It will be three years of your life. The first year, you'll hate it. The second year, you will ask yourself what the hell you're doing in NYC. If you make it to the end of the third year, you will never leave." I decided I didn't want to spend three years of my life like that, and moved to Europe instead.

Thinking back, I was so green in those days that by the end of the first month NYC would have eaten me alive. There would have been a small chewing noise and I would have vanished without a trace.
