There are many places in the world where Feb 14 is really just the day between the 13th and the 15th. I'm fortunate enough to live in one. Some stores (mostly supermarkets--???) tried to push the Valentine thing in the 80s but it didn't really last. People knew it for what it was--advertising hype on the part of chocolate makers, florists and card makers.
There is a great line in Philip Barry's 1928 play "Holiday".
-Life is a grand ride,if you take it yourself. And no good at all if someone takes you on it. Damn it, there's no life any good but the one you make for yourself.
